For the longest time, I’ve always heard “Everything is made in China” and I never doubted that With that mindset, I looked through my items expecting just about everything to be made in China- which it was. However, there were some locations that surprised me like Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Outsourcing is a major problem in the States. Americans are losing their jobs to to cheap labor in other countries. Although many people argue that outsourcing is hurting our economy, as consumers it benefits their wallets.
When I went through my items there was several things that struck me. The first one being that not everything made in China was poorly constructed. My iphone for example, has been with me for several years. I have dropped it many, many times and even chucked it when I’m angry. Despite the abuse the screen has yet to be cracked and it still functions. Majority of the products are manufactured in corrupt or poorer than America countries. While we often disagree with the methods of cheap labor, the price tag on these items would cause many to overlook that. The bigger brands such as apple and sony are still expensive despite being made in China. However if these products were to be manufactured in the US like most would prefer, the price would automatically shoot up. Frankly, I think don’t too many Americans will be happy with that.
As Americans, you’d like to have your items all American-- made in the US. However as consumers you’d also like to save your money as much as possible (unless you’re mega-rich which I doubt). This combination makes it really hard to argue for one side. Should outsourcing stop America will have more jobs; but our wallets will have to pay the price for that. Until we decide whether a better economy or cheaper goods is more important, it would be hypocritical for us to argue against it.
